How Do I Choose The Right Size Faux Rocks For My Project?
That’s an awesome question we are always happy to hear customers ask! The truth is, choosing the right size DekoRRa Mock Rocks can be a bit tricky because of how they are shaped. The exterior dimensions listed for each model are measurements taken at the very base. This is where they are the largest, at the very bottom where they contact the ground. Using these dimensions to gauge how large of an object can be enclosed is a big mistake.
Why is using the exterior dimensions a big mistake when looking to buy artificial rocks and faux rocks for landscaping?
These DekoRRa models are made to appear as natural and realistic as possible. People don’t want big chunks of obviously plastic faux boulders adorning their yards. And the fake rocks foam companies manufacture are prone to U.V. damage and become brittle in the cold.
It doesn’t really make sense to hide an ugly well, septic, or utility box with an equally unsightly hunk of cheap plastic artificial rock that’s going to fade in the sun and look even worse in a couple months.
If you look at real life boulders, one thing most of them have in common is they are wider at the base vs up near the top. In the case of these hollow fake rocks, this translates to a loss of interior space the higher up you go.
So the taller an object is and the wider and longer it is up near the top, the larger the fake landscaping rocks are going to need to be. And the texturing on the outside walls also eats up interior space within. Every indentation on the exterior is gobbling up useable space on the inside.
Luckily DekoRRa artificial rocks are available in a wide variety of sizes ideally suited to fit specific applications. Why spend all the time and frustration of trying to make fake rocks yourself when using these is so much faster and easier?
The Model 107 for example, was specifically designed to cover water well risers, and the Model 110 was made for backflow prevention and irrigation valves, the big 104 and 114 artificial boulders are geared towards utility boxes and well pressure tanks.
But just because a particular model is pictured covering a utility box or a well does not guarantee it will fit every utility box and well out there! When these utilities are installed there is no real exact template that is used by the contractors, so we end up with wells and septics and electrical boxes installed in different configurations, in different sizes etc.
Now if a person is using these as faux landscaping boulders, trade show displays, or as fake rocks for props then interior space may not be a big deal. But in cases where a utility is going to be hidden underneath, then it’s crucial to take careful measurements of the utility at both the base and also up at the top.
So you want the exact length and width down at the very bottom and the exact length and width up at the very top. With this information you can then use the interior dimension charts to select models you know will be large enough for your application.
The interior dimension charts can be a bit of a challenge to use, so many customers simply provide us with the measurements and we respond quickly with a list of choices that will best suit their specific applications. We’ve been selling DekoRRa products for several years now, and we’re very familiar with sizing the different models for specific projects.
Depending on where you live, you might have a wellhead rise sticking up from the ground, or an even larger water well pressure tank aside from the electric pump. A simple water well riser is best suited for the 101, 102, 115 and 107 models. Each of these is designed to easily and quickly cover and protect the components underneath.
Wells with pumps exposed adjacent to the pressure tank will need the larger model 104 or 114 options.
Traditional septic tank risers are either concrete or green plastic. Older versions tend to be concrete, while more recent versions sold at Home Depot, Lowes and other lawn and garden outlets tend to be green plastic. More often than not the green plastic variety will have a junction box attached to one side. The junction box contains the electrical wires and allows for easy access to them. Depending on the diameter of the septic tank and it’s overall height the most common solutions are the DekoRRa Models 108, 111, 112, 118, 119 and 103.
Smaller models are ideal for hiding things like outdoor power outlets, landscape lighting transformers, vent pipes, and more. Many people add them to the landscaping around their home to add color and character. Despite the small size, these are just as durable and weather-proof than the larger models. Consider the DekoRRa 105, 106, 107, 108, and 109 when looking for lower profile designs.
Artificial rocks and boulders large enough to effectively cover an electrical utility box are not easy to find for sale. Most big box stores like Lowes and Home Depot don’t stock these large artificial rocks because their size takes up too much precious floor space.
These large faux boulders can come in handy for commercial applications as well. Water parks, state and national parks and wildlife areas and many camp grounds use them to hide and protect electrical boxes and utilities from tampering or simply to hide them from view. This camping product review website wrote about some different uses the rocks are being used to protect and insulate water lines at RV camp sites with great success!
It’s very important to add vents to any artificial rocks you are using to hide utility boxes and electrical boxes. Components inside the boxes can be sensitive to overheating, so you want to make sure the enclosure allows for air flow.
Backflow irrigation valves are becoming more and more popular as concerns over water quality grow. Leaving these valves exposed in cold climates can spell disaster, as freezing water expands and can destroy the intricate interior valve components. Artificial rocks provide homeowners with a fast and easy means of protecting backflow devices and backflow parts, while helping them blend into the landscaping around the home, and hiding them from thieves. The DekoRRa Mock Rock Models 110, 116 and 117 are great artificial boulders for applications requiring backflow protection.
Backflow enclosures for frost and freeze protection and backflow insulation bags are in stock and ready for fast shipping. Many of the mock rocks can be used as fake rock covers for backflow valves. Fake rocks models 103, 110, 116, and 117 are the most popular options for backflow protection and insulation.
Prop Rocks For Stage Productions, Parades, and Movie Sets
Making faux rocks from scratch can be a very time-consuming process. With professional productions in many cases, time is of the essence. Our prop rocks offer incredible realism without any heavy lifting or hours spent molding, shaping and painting mock rocks. The hollow design makes it easy to move the stones around for different scenes and shots. Many models are strong enough to sit or even stand on.
Large Landscaping Boulders As Hunting Blinds
Believe it or not, some of the large faux boulders like the DekoRRa Model 104, 123, and 114 have been used as hunting blinds. This crossbow review website has used them for different hunting applications with much success. Deer, turkey and even waterfowl hunters have altered the fake boulders by cutting windows and doors in them to use as hunting blinds. If you currently own hunting land or know someone who does, don’t rule out a mock boulder hunting blind as a means of bagging your next trophy buck!
Other Uses For Fake Rock Covers
Some of the larger models have been converted for outdoor home audio as well. Users claim they make the best fake rock speakers for your outdoor pool or patio areas, with many adding blue-tooth speakers to the rocks for a fast and easy results.
